Federal Government Reveals ₦350 Billion Budget for Enugu–Onitsha Highway
The Federal Government announced on Thursday, April 2, 2026, that the total cost for the reconstruction of the Enugu–Onitsha federal highway is estimated at ₦350 billion. Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, shared this update while inaugurating completed sections of the road, praising President Bola Tinubu’s resolve to finish the long-standing project.
According to the Minister, the original ₦202 billion contract was reviewed to include more durable materials. A significant 72-kilometre stretch is being reconstructed using reinforced concrete pavement at a cost of approximately ₦150 billion. This specific section adheres to higher durability standards, similar to those applied to the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway.
Senator Umahi confirmed that the first 15 kilometres of the concrete section are 97% complete and are being opened to traffic to ease movement during the Easter holidays. Work is also ongoing on an 18-kilometre stretch toward Anambra and a 39-kilometre segment extending from the River Niger Bridge axis.
To ensure the road lasts between 50 and 100 years, the Ministry has directed contractors to switch from asphalt to reinforced concrete for the remaining 23 kilometres. The Minister noted that 50% of the entire highway will now feature concrete, which requires minimal maintenance compared to asphalt.
Supervisors for the various sections expressed their gratitude for the Federal Government’s consistent support. They pledged to remain on track for a full project completion date within 2026.
