Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Jaiye Kuti, has called out her peers in the Nigerian film industry for what she sees as a lack of true love and support among them.

In an interview with Oyinmomo TV, the actress, who is also known as Jayeola Monje, mentioned that relationships within Nollywood are slowly breaking down because many in the industry choose to stay quiet about shared problems rather than speak up.

Kuti pointed out that many actors and filmmakers act as if everything is okay even though they know there are issues facing the industry.

She shared her feelings after one of her movies was reportedly taken down from several cinemas. The actress felt let down that none of her colleagues publicly backed her or offered support, even though they experience similar struggles.

She raised concerns about the admiration fans have for celebrities, claiming that the public often doesn’t see what goes on behind closed doors in show business.

“Not a single actor went to those cinemas or supported me, even though we’re all facing the same situation,” she said.

The actress also criticized what she sees as shallow friendships among her colleagues. She noted that while many are quick to celebrate each other’s birthdays, they do not come together during tough times.

She shared that she has quit sending birthday wishes to her coworkers because she feels these gestures are not genuine.

“If I celebrate my birthday, the next day they will say happy birthday to me. So, I stopped wishing others a happy birthday because I don’t want anyone to wish me one. Please don’t,” she explained.

Kuti also pointed out the money challenges that come with making and distributing films. She emphasized that many people do not realize how much money it takes to create movies or the struggles filmmakers face when trying to make back their production costs.
