APC Dismisses Claims of Assassination Plot Against Atiku
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has rejected claims that the Federal Government is planning to assassinate former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, calling the accusation false and unfounded.
Dele Alake, the spokesperson for the council, made this statement in a press release on October 20, 2026, responding to accusations from Timi Frank, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Frank claimed that the Nigerian Government was attempting to kill Atiku, who is the ADC’s presidential candidate.
Alake urged security agencies to question Frank about his serious allegation and asked him to share any evidence he might have to help with an investigation.
He emphasized that any real threat to someone’s life should be taken seriously, no matter their political background.
The APC campaign council firmly denied any involvement by the Presidency or itself in a plot against Atiku or any opposition leader.
It also rejected claims that security personnel assigned to protect the former vice-president had been removed, stating that he continues to receive protection from both the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Alake stated that President Bola Tinubu has recently instructed security agencies to enhance protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship, and deputy governorship candidates nationwide.
He pointed out that Atiku, as a former vice-president, receives two levels of state-funded security and mentioned that his security measures have been improved ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Alake described Tinubu as a dedicated statesman and democrat who values opposition politics as vital to Nigeria’s 27-year-old democracy.
He remembered that Tinubu had been a key figure in the opposition for 16 years before the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lost power in 2015.
The spokesperson accused Frank and other opposition leaders of making exaggerated claims and writing open letters while tagging foreign leaders and international organizations on social media to gain attention.
He cautioned that as the campaign season nears, politicians and their supporters might make exaggerated statements and unfounded accusations.
However, Alake encouraged political candidates, parties, and their supporters to remain calm and ensure that public statements are accurate and responsible.
He emphasized that political competition should be peaceful, lawful, and focused on real issues affecting Nigerians instead of personal attacks and baseless claims.
