The Federal Road Safety Corps has strongly condemned an alleged armed assault on its personnel by a motorist identified as an operative of the Department of State Services during a routine traffic enforcement operation in Abuja.

According to an official statement issued by the agency, the violent encounter occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at approximately 3:20 p.m. within the jurisdiction of the RS7.118 Idu Unit Command in the Federal Capital Territory.

The confrontation began when a deployed road safety patrol team flagged down the driver of a Toyota Carina over a suspected traffic violation, initiating a chain of events that rapidly escalated from routine enforcement into a critical security breach.

The economic and infrastructural implications of lawlessness and clashes between state security agents on public roads are highly detrimental to the national capital’s investment climate. Public highways serve as vital economic arteries for the movement of goods, labor, and services, and any disruption caused by armed conflict or reckless driving directly threatens commercial productivity.

When security personnel, who are constitutionally mandated to protect the state, engage in violent altercations in public spaces, it undermines institutional stability and erodes investor confidence in national safety frameworks. Furthermore, these incidents can cause severe traffic congestion, leading to lost economic hours, increased fuel consumption, and higher operational risks for logistics and transport businesses operating within the municipality.

Reports from the scene indicate that the driver openly defied lawful directives to halt his vehicle, continuing to drive recklessly through the area until he became trapped in heavy traffic near the unit command. The situation deteriorated significantly when road safety officers approached the vehicle to conduct standard documentation and compliance checks.

The suspect reportedly became hostile, directing verbal abuse at the patrol team and resisting the administrative enforcement process. Despite attempts by the marshals to de-escalate the confrontation professionally, the individual advanced toward the officers, drew a pistol, and fired two live rounds within the immediate vicinity of the busy command post.

In the face of immediate danger to both public property and human lives, the road safety personnel reportedly exercised remarkable restraint and tactical discipline, managing to disarm the assailant swiftly without any loss of life. While one marshal sustained minor bruises during the physical struggle to neutralize the threat, the team successfully detained the suspect and confiscated the firearm, ammunition components, and the vehicle involved.

The assailant was immediately transported and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force station in Life Camp for detention, before preliminary investigations unmasked his identity as an active operative of the secret police, prompting a transfer of the case to the appropriate state command for deeper interrogation.

Reacting to the dangerous encounter, the Corps Marshal of the regulatory agency, Shehu Mohammed, highly praised the bravery and professional conduct of the field officers who managed the crisis under extreme provocation and tension. The road safety chief emphasized that no individual, regardless of their social status, official rank, or institutional affiliation, exists above the statutory laws of the federation.

He issued a stern warning against the dangerous misuse of firearms and official influence to intimidate law enforcement officers executing their legitimate constitutional responsibilities, reminding all armed personnel that they are expected to lead by example through total compliance with established traffic regulations.

Ultimately, the resolution of this conflict highlights the urgent need for structural reforms, stronger institutional cooperation, and mutual respect among various arms of national security to safeguard public welfare. Incidents of inter-agency friction not only distract from primary security duties but also damage the public image of law enforcement in the eyes of citizens and international observers.

Ensuring strict accountability and transparent judicial or administrative punishment for the offending operative will be crucial to reinforcing the rule of law and maintaining a secure, predictable environment for economic and social activities within the Federal Capital Territory.
