The Catholic Diocese of Jalingo has officially launched a strategic initiative to combat electoral irregularities and champion democratic integrity in Taraba State ahead of the 2027 general elections. Announced on Monday during the Diocese’s 22nd Biennial General Assembly in Jalingo, the move reflects the Church’s deep concern over how flawed electoral systems continue to destabilize society. Under the theme “Church–State Partnership for Credible Election in Taraba,” the Diocese is calling for a transition toward transparent and just procedures that prioritize the welfare of the citizenry over political manipulation.

Most Rev. Charles M. Hammawa, the Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, emphasized that while the constitution dictates a separation between Church and State, both institutions share a common goal of fostering peaceful coexistence and societal development. He noted that Nigerian elections have historically been questionable and contentious, making local collaboration essential to ensure that every stage of the democratic process—from pre-election mobilization to post-election governance—is held to a higher standard of fairness. The Bishop clarified that this partnership is not about endorsing specific candidates but about challenging government agencies to perform their duties without fear or favor.

A key pillar of this initiative is the moral and civic education of the faithful. Bishop Hammawa stated that the Church would remain strictly non-partisan while fulfilling its mission to enlighten citizens on their political rights and responsibilities. This sentiment was echoed by the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Jos, Rt. Rev. Prof. Msgr. Cletus T. Gotan, who delivered a paper urging the total rejection of vote-buying, which he described as a betrayal of human dignity. He advocated for a principled alliance between the Church, security agencies, and electoral bodies to mentor the youth and prevent the weaponization of ethnicity or religion during the heat of a campaign.

The assembly drew significant stakeholders, including former Governor Jolly Nyame and representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Current Governor Agbu Kefas, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Gibon Kataps, lauded the Catholic Church for its proactive vision in redefining governance. The state government pledged its full support for the initiative, affirming a commitment to transparent elections that accurately reflect the will of the people of Taraba State.

By leveraging its universal nature and moral authority, the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo seeks to act as a unifying force across communal lines. The initiative aims to create a “principled collaboration” where the Church maintains its independence while actively advocating for integrity, justice, and accountability in the public square. Stakeholders expressed optimism that this early start to electoral reform will provide the necessary foundation for a peaceful and credible transition in 2027.
