The Lagos State Government has encouraged the people of Ijede in Ikorodu to take an active role in the democratic process and meet their civic duties.

This message was delivered during a one-day Voter Education program hosted by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE) at the Ijede Local Council Development Area Secretariat on Madan Street.

According to the state government, this initiative is part of efforts to boost civic awareness and enhance participation in democracy at the local level.

In her opening speech, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, the Permanent Secretary of OPL&CE, who was represented by Dr. Babatunde Omotayo from the Citizens’ Engagement Department, referred to this effort as a focused attempt to revive civic responsibility and equip citizens with the knowledge and confidence needed for meaningful participation in governance.

Shasore noted that this voter education campaign is not just a one-time event but part of a larger movement toward civic renewal led by the state government through OPL&CE.

She emphasized that the goal of this initiative is to encourage active, inclusive, and responsible citizenship. She reminded everyone that democracy should not be seen as something spectators watch but as a shared involvement between those in power and those they serve.

Additionally, she explained that voter education involves more than just knowing where and how to vote; it also includes understanding why voting matters and recognizing the responsibilities that come with exercising one’s right to vote.

She encouraged attendees to become ambassadors for their communities by sharing what they learned and helping to fight against voter suppression, misinformation, and electoral violence, while also safeguarding the importance of the ballot.

The permanent secretary highlighted that residents should stay involved even after elections by communicating with their representatives and contributing to community growth.

During a discussion on voter education, Mr. Sunday Obanubi from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) advised voters to keep their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) secure and in good shape.

Obanubi also taught participants how to locate their polling units using the information on their voter cards.

In his speech, Mr. Osiyemi Joshua, the Head of Tracka at the BudgIT Foundation, encouraged residents to stay informed and engage actively with government at all levels.

He emphasized the need for holding public officials accountable and working together to create safer and more responsible communities.

Additionally, Hon. Kabiru Kareem, the Vice Chairman of Ijede LCDA, urged residents to support government programs and take part in elections.

Kareem mentioned that citizen involvement is essential for achieving real development and making positive changes in their neighborhoods.

The event also offered participants details about various programs from the Lagos State Government while addressing questions related to voter participation, polling unit transfers, and other election processes.
