Obi and Kwankwaso Challenge Nigerians to Scrutinize Their Pasts

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a bold public challenge, urging Nigerians to thoroughly investigate his background, and that of his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to expose any past wrongdoings.

The former Anambra State governor made this sweeping declaration on Thursday during a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The interactive session, tagged “Obi Talks Nigeria,” provided a platform for the candidate to field questions regarding his ambitions and strategies for the 2027 general elections.

The Transparency Debate

Obi’s defiant remarks arrive amidst intense public debate surrounding the track records and educational credentials of the leading 2027 presidential contenders, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. The controversy recently deepened after all three major candidates omitted their primary and secondary school certificates from the personal particulars submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in late July.

Distancing himself from the growing political opacity, Obi insisted that he and Kwankwaso have maintained complete transparency with the electorate. He stated that they have openly presented their entire histories, from their dates of birth to their educational qualifications, inviting citizens to verify their records globally.

Addressing recent controversies head-on, Obi made a thinly veiled reference to his ongoing defamation lawsuit against Kenneth Okonkwo, his spokesperson during the 2023 campaign. Obi explained that he took decisive legal action after Okonkwo publicly claimed to possess shocking secrets about his past dealings.

“We have sued somebody in court. He said he knows something he can say and the people will be shocked. I said I want you to say what people will be shocked about,” Obi declared to the gathered crowd.

Expanding this challenge to the entire nation, the NDC candidate added, “If there is anything that you know I have done that is wrong, say it out now. I’m challenging the world over: if you know anything that Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has done that is wrong, say it out now.”

A Call for Excellence

Concluding his address, Obi emphasized that the legitimacy of a political leader is deeply tied to the integrity of their journey to power. He insisted that anyone seeking the highest office in the land must emerge through an unimpeachable process.

“You cannot continue to answer ‘His Excellency’ when the process that got you there is not excellent,” he stated, setting a firm moral tone for his 2027 campaign.
