The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has opposed the decision to dissolve the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). They view this action as a breach of students’ democratic rights and proper procedures.

In a statement from their National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS expressed worry about a notice issued by the Dean of Student Affairs that announced the immediate dissolution of the Students’ Union, Hall Representatives, and all related activities.

While NANS recognizes that university officials have the right to look into claims of misconduct involving student leaders, they argue that shutting down the union without following due process, being transparent, and allowing fair hearings is not acceptable.

The students’ organization emphasized that the Students’ Union Government is a democratic body created to safeguard students’ interests and well-being. It cannot be disbanded through an administrative order without clear allegations, a thorough investigation, and a chance for those affected to defend themselves.

Additionally, NANS raised concerns about how fair the process was. They pointed out that the memo required union officials to quickly hand over union property, official papers, and financial documents while also asking them to appear before an investigative panel later on.

Concerns have been raised about the transparency and independence of the investigation due to the development.

“NANS will not watch idly as the democratic rights of Nigerian students are taken away through administrative orders,” the statement said.

The association urged the University of Port Harcourt’s management to halt the implementation of the dissolution order right away and to honor the democratic choice of the elected Students’ Union officials.

It also called for the university to publicly share the specific accusations against the student leaders, form an unbiased and clear investigative panel, ensure that the affected officials receive a fair hearing, and avoid any intimidation, victimization, or disciplinary actions against student representatives.

While reaffirming its commitment to accountability, NANS stated that any student leader found guilty of financial misconduct or other offenses should face consequences according to proper procedures.

However, it cautioned that accountability should not be misused as a way to undermine students’ democracy or silence legitimate representation.

NANS described the University of Port Harcourt as a place of learning and democracy, emphasizing that dialogue, investigation, and due process are essential for settling disputes between university authorities and student leaders.

The association revealed that it is working with relevant stakeholders on this issue and promised to take all lawful actions needed to protect students’ rights, welfare, and democratic institutions at the University of Port Harcourt.

Additionally, NANS demanded an immediate reversal of the dissolution order until a transparent and fair investigation is completed.
