The Nigerian Army has commenced investigations into alleged insider involvement in the attack on Geidam, Yobe State, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, following the arrest and subsequent death in custody of L/Cpl Jibrin, a weapons instructor serving with a battalion in the area.

Military sources told Daily Times that Jibrin had been absent from his duty post for two days before he was identified among insurgents during the attack.

He was later tracked to Gashua and arrested at a checkpoint while attempting to travel to Gombe State.

According to the sources, during interrogation, Jibrin made statements alleging the involvement of other personnel in previous security breaches.

Authorities said the information provided led to the detention of several suspects, including some soldiers serving in formations in Geidam and Gombe.

Jibrin later died while in custody on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

The circumstances are being investigated by military authorities.

Jibrin, described by colleagues as a skilled weapons instructor, hailed from Biu LGA of Borno State.

As of press time, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement on the incident.

A security source said the case underscores the need for strengthened internal checks and counter-intelligence within military formations to address threats from within.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full network and prevent a recurrence,” the source added.
