Governor Alex Otti has dismissed speculations that the Abia State Government is seeking reimbursements for its work on federal road projects. Speaking during a media interactive session on Friday night, Otti clarified that the Federal Government has no plans to pay back states for such interventions. Instead, he noted that a new federal policy allows states to toll these roads if they wish to recover their investments.

The Governor criticised those spreading rumours about reimbursements, attributing their claims to a lack of information. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fixing all roads within the state regardless of their official designation. Otti emphasised that Abia residents use all these routes, making their maintenance a priority. He added that the state only begins work on federal roads after securing written permission from the central government.

Regarding the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road rehabilitation, Otti addressed the issue of compensation for affected residents. He stated his expectation that the Federal Government should handle these payments since it originally awarded the project without providing funds. While the state usually pays compensation for its own projects, the Governor suggested that this specific route remains a federal responsibility.

Beyond infrastructure, Otti shared updates on security and politics. He confirmed that Abia is preparing to establish a state police force as soon as the federal government gives the final approval. The Governor also ruled out any plans to defect to another political party. He declared his intention to run for re-election in 2027 under the Labour Party (LP), noting that recent court decisions have resolved the party’s leadership issues.

Finally, the Governor provided a positive update on the state’s new electric bus initiative. He revealed that 30 more buses are expected to arrive by July 2026, which will bring the state’s total fleet to 50 vehicles. This expansion aims to modernise public transport and reduce the cost of commuting for residents.
