The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that its firefighters’ training programme will adopt a hybrid model combining virtual learning, classroom instruction and practical field exercises.

The clarification was made in a statement issued in Lagos by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.

Agbebire was responding to media reports suggesting that the Nigerian Aviation Fire and Safety Association (NAFSA) had opposed an online training programme proposed by the authority.

According to him, the training programme is structured as a six-week course that blends virtual learning with classroom sessions and practical field exercises.

“The hybrid or blended approach reflects modern global training practices and is designed to strengthen, not weaken, the competence of Airport Rescue and Firefighting personnel,” he said.

Agbebire explained that while theoretical components of the programme may be delivered virtually to improve efficiency and participation, practical drills and live simulations will remain a critical part of the training.

He added that the training framework fully complies with provisions of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 14 and the advisory circular guidelines of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which require hands-on drills, exercises and safety simulations.

Agbebire further noted that the hybrid training model would enable FAAN to train more personnel effectively while ensuring that airport operations continue smoothly without compromising safety standards or emergency readiness.
