The Progressive Institute (TPI), -the official think tank of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), recently concluded a three-day training retreat in Owerri, Imo State aimed at enhancing public sector governance among principal officers from the 27 local governments in Imo State.

The event took place from August 13 to August 15, 2025, at Sam Mbakwe Hall in Owerri.

In a statement signed by Wale Abideen, Head of Media and Strategic Communication at The Progressive Institute, it was highlighted that the retreat, themed “Enhancing Local Government Governance for Sustainable Development,” was officially opened by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma.

The governor challenged local government officials to be true representatives by living within their communities and fostering close relationships with their constituents.

Governor Uzodimma cautioned against indiscipline and corruption, emphasizing the importance of complying with laws and dedicating themselves to service. “As local government officials, you are expected to live within your communities. You must relate well with community leaders, traditional rulers, youths, and ordinary citizens to understand their needs and respond accordingly,” he stated.

He further revealed that security agencies would monitor adherence to these directives.

Expressing appreciation for the governor’s support, Wale Abideen said, “We appreciate Governor Uzodimma’s visionary leadership and his unwavering commitment to strengthening local governance in Imo State.”

The retreat gathered 575 participants, including chairmen, vice chairmen, secretaries, treasurers, directors, councillors, and supervisory councillors, who received training on key areas such as public procurement, financial management, public service rules, policymaking, ethics and anti-corruption, local legislation, revenue generation, and project monitoring.

Traditional rulers and resource persons from tertiary institutions within and outside Imo State also participated, enriching the sessions with their expertise.

The interactive format encouraged active discussions and practical learning designed to equip officials for sustainable local development.

The retreat was lauded by participants and guests as one of Nigeria’s most comprehensive capacity-building programs for local government officials, emphasizing progressive governance and effective public service delivery.

By concluding this retreat, The Progressive Institute and its partners have reinforced the principles of accountability, transparency, and community-focused governance as essential elements for lasting development in Imo State and across Nigeria.
