Senate Considers Allowing Medical College to Award PhDs
The Nigerian Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to empower the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) to award Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in clinical medicine.
The proposed legislation seeks to expand the college’s academic powers by allowing it to confer doctoral degrees, potentially strengthening postgraduate medical education and research in Nigeria.
Bill Seeks to Expand Medical College’s Powers
The bill, which has passed its second reading in the Senate, proposes granting the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria the authority to award PhD degrees in clinical medicine.
If passed into law, the proposed measure would give the college additional academic responsibilities in the area of advanced medical research and doctoral education.
Proposal Targets Medical Research and Training
The proposed change could create additional opportunities for medical professionals to pursue doctoral research within a specialised medical institution.
However, the bill must progress through the remaining legislative stages before any new powers can take effect.
