The Nigerian Navy says it is leveraging music as a soft power tool to enhance troop morale, promote national unity, and strengthen civil-military relations.

The Commander, Naval Base Abuja, Oluseyi Oladipo, made this known during the 2026 Nigerian Navy Band Musical Concert held at the Naval Base Abuja Parade Ground.

Oladipo explained that the concert was not merely for entertainment but served as a platform to connect with families, stakeholders, and the general public, while reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to national security.

He noted that music has historically played a significant role in military operations by motivating personnel, fostering cohesion, and inspiring troops during both training and combat.

According to him, the Navy continues to deploy personnel across the six geopolitical zones in joint and independent operations, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The commander added that the concert aligned with the command philosophy of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abass, which prioritises building a mission-ready force through improved welfare and morale.

He said the Navy’s band performances symbolise service, discipline, and unity, while also celebrating the professionalism of personnel contributing to operational successes nationwide.

Oladipo commended officers and ratings in various theatres of operation, as well as their families, for their resilience and sacrifices in support of national security.

He further emphasised that music remains relevant in modern military practice, helping to inspire patriotism and sustain fighting spirit amid evolving security challenges.

The naval commander called on Nigerians to support the Armed Forces with credible information to aid ongoing operations, assuring that the Navy, alongside other security agencies, remains committed to defending the nation.

Reports shows that the event featured performances by the Nigerian Navy Band, showcasing musical excellence while promoting messages of peace, unity, and national pride.

Historically, the Nigerian Navy Band dates back to the early 1960s shortly after independence, evolving into a professional unit in 1963 under the late Capt. Frederick Oluwole Bucknor, and has since developed into a structured Directorate of Music supporting naval operations and national engagements.
