FG reiterates commitment to empower persons living with disabilities

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) to excel and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.

This was emphasized during the International Day of Persons With Disabilities celebration in Abuja, themed “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress.”

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, CON, reiterated the administration’s focus on promoting leadership qualities among persons with disabilities, ensuring they can attain strategic positions across all sectors.

A statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations, quoted the SGF’s representative, Permanent Secretary Overseeing General Services Office, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, who said the government is dedicated to guaranteeing equal access to education and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities to help them achieve their career goals.

The government under the Renewed Hope Agenda has mandated strict enforcement of the 5% employment quota for qualified persons with disabilities in all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

It also focuses on providing accessible tools, work environments, and expanding leadership and enterprise opportunities, including support for PWD-owned businesses.

Accessibility and inclusion are now legal requirements, and excuses for non-compliance are no longer accepted.Further to this, multiple government initiatives such as the Empowerment Programme launched by Nigeria’s First Lady provide business recapitalization grants to thousands of PLWDs across the country to support entrepreneurship and economic independence.

Additionally, the National Access to Work Scheme supplies assistive devices and technologies to employed persons with disabilities, promoting an inclusive labor market.Nigerians are urged to reject stereotypes and stigma, working collaboratively towards a society where everyone has equal access to leadership roles, resources, and full participation in development.

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated annually to highlight dignity, rights, and the benefits of inclusion in all aspects of life.This multi-faceted approach underscores the Federal Government’s genuine commitment to empowering persons with disabilities as key contributors to Nigeria’s social and economic progress.
