KWAM 1 appointed as airport protocol ambassador after ban reduction

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation, says Wasiu Ayinde, the Fuji musician popularly known as KWAM 1, will serve as an ambassador for airport security protocol.

Keyamo announced the decision on Wednesday via his X page while addressing recent incidents in the aviation sector.

According to him, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will work with the artiste to promote proper conduct at airports nationwide.

“In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

“Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” he said.

Keyamo said all criminal charges against the singer would be dropped immediately.

The minister also spoke on the suspension of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and co-pilot Ivan Oloba of ValueJet. He said their licences will be restored after a one-month ban and a mandatory professional reappraisal by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

He added that he had directed all relevant aviation agencies, alongside other security bodies, to begin a retreat next week on handling disruptive passengers and de-escalating tense situations.

On the conduct of airline personnel, he said the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) will also hold a session to address staff attitude towards travellers.

“These above decisions were taken by government and the airline operators purely on compassionate grounds as government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved,” Keyamo said.

He added that all charges against Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger who was serving a no-fly ban, would also be dismissed, and she should be released from Kirikiri prison before the end of the week.
